Empowering Future Educators: Reflections and Insights from the SEA-Teacher Batch 10 Program

Participating in the SEA-Teacher Batch 10 Program was a transformative journey, filled with valuable lessons, cultural exchanges, and meaningful teaching experiences. As a pre-service teacher, the program provided a platform to practice teaching in an international setting, observe diverse educational practices, and grow both personally and professionally. Here’s a snapshot of my journey and key takeaways, along with suggestions for future participants.

Highlights of the Experience

1. Cultural Immersion

Teaching at Araullo High School in Manila gave me firsthand exposure to the Philippines' education system and culture. From learning about the student-centered approach often used in classrooms to experiencing the warmth of Filipino hospitality, every moment was enriching. Collaborating with local teachers and students strengthened my ability to adapt and connect in new environments.

2. Developing Teaching Skills

The program emphasized active learning and student engagement, encouraging me to craft creative lesson plans and incorporate interactive activities. Highlights included using games like Wordwall, integrating music-based learning, and encouraging peer assessments—all of which made learning more dynamic for students.

3. Constructive Feedback

The post-conference sessions were instrumental in refining my teaching skills. Feedback from my cooperating teacher and supervisor helped me identify my strengths, such as fostering participation and implementing diverse activities, while also highlighting areas for improvement, like better time management and enhancing the clarity of instructions.

4. Cross-Cultural Collaboration

Meeting fellow SEA-Teacher participants from other countries, as well as local educators, opened doors for collaboration and exchange of ideas. Sharing experiences and teaching strategies enriched my perspective and broadened my understanding of global education.

Suggestions for Future Participants

1. Prepare to Adapt

Flexibility is key when teaching in a new country. Take time to learn about the host country’s curriculum, teaching styles, and classroom norms. Adapt your approach to meet the needs of students while incorporating your unique teaching style.

2. Embrace Cultural Differences

Dive into the culture of the host country. Whether it’s trying local food, exploring traditional practices, or understanding student behavior, immersing yourself will make the experience more rewarding.

3. Engage with Students Creatively

Use innovative methods to capture students’ interest. Gamification, storytelling, and multimedia resources can make lessons more enjoyable and effective. Don’t hesitate to experiment with new teaching techniques!

4. Leverage Feedback

Be open to constructive criticism. Your cooperating teachers and supervisors are there to guide you. Actively seek their input and use it to refine your skills.

5. Network and Reflect

Build connections with fellow participants and educators. These relationships can provide support during the program and open doors for future opportunities. Reflect on your journey through journaling or blogging to capture the invaluable lessons learned.

Conclusion

The SEA-Teacher Batch 10 Program is more than just a teaching practice; it’s a gateway to professional growth and cross-cultural understanding. By stepping out of my comfort zone, I gained not only confidence in teaching but also a deeper appreciation for the power of education in bridging cultures. For future participants, my advice is simple: embrace every challenge, celebrate every achievement, and let this experience shape you into an educator ready to inspire the next generation.

Embarking on a Journey with the SEA-Teacher Program

In September 2023, I had the privilege of sending my friend off to the airport as he embarked on the SEA-Teacher Batch 9 program. Throughout his time in Tapaz, Philippines, he shared daily updates that left me amazed by his experiences. Inspired by his journey, I set a goal to join the program in the next batch.   Fast forward a year, the opportunity finally arrived. My study program coordinator announced that the SEA-Teacher Batch 10 program registration was open. Without hesitation, I applied and eagerly awaited the next step: the interview. The interview was scheduled for August 23, coinciding with my umroh appointment. After arriving in Medina at 1 a.m., I received news that I had been shortlisted for the interview. While thrilled, I felt disheartened knowing I couldn’t attend it in person. Encouraged by my mother, I decided to let go and trust in fate. However, my study program coordinator suggested I contact the vice dean to inquire about a virtual interview option. My v...

A Memorable Day: SEA-Teacher Welcome Event at PNU

Showcasing Indonesian and Filipino Cultures  October 11, 2024, was a beautiful and eventful day. The agenda was the official welcome ceremony for SEA-Teacher participants hosted by Philippine Normal University (PNU). My colleagues and I dressed in traditional Palembang attire: baju kurung , kain songket , and the iconic gandik  headpiece. Around 11 a.m., we were picked up from the hostel and escorted to the PNU auditorium.   The event was lively and enjoyable. Before it officially began, the attendees were invited to participate in a fun "tongue twister" game featuring Indonesian and Tagalog phrases. The atmosphere grew even more festive when the choir performed Indonesia’s national anthem, "Indonesia Raya".   Our group also contributed to the celebrations by singing the patriotic song "Indonesia Pusaka". It was a proud moment to share a piece of our heritage with the audience.   Toward the end of the ceremony, PNU students impressed us with a mus...
